The Symptoms of Alzheimer's disease include:
  • Mood and personality changes: depression, apathy, anxiety
  • Confusion, inattention, loss of short term memory (memory for recent events or new information)
  • Increased tendency to misplace things (often in bizarre places i.e. keys in fridge)
  • Dizziness, loss of balance
  • Disorientation-getting lost in familiar surroundings, difficulty following directions
  • Repeat the same story, sometimes minutes apart
  • Forgetting how to do basic familiar tasks once done with ease, use a toaster, boil an egg, put gas in the car
  • Lose the ability to handle everyday finances such as pay bills, balance the checkbook etc
  • Develop insecurity and begin to shy away from previous social interactions and decision making.
  • Muscular spasms and twitches (most often seen in early onset Alzheimer's)
  • Behavioral disturbances-wandering, agitation, combativeness, psychosis occur in later stages of the disease
  • Gait disturbance and poor motor function as disease progresses
