Symptoms
The Symptoms of Alzheimer's disease include:
- Mood and personality changes: depression, apathy, anxiety
- Confusion, inattention, loss of short term memory (memory for recent events or new information)
- Increased tendency to misplace things (often in bizarre places i.e. keys in fridge)
- Dizziness, loss of balance
- Disorientation-getting lost in familiar surroundings, difficulty following directions
- Repeat the same story, sometimes minutes apart
- Forgetting how to do basic familiar tasks once done with ease, use a toaster, boil an egg, put gas in the car
- Lose the ability to handle everyday finances such as pay bills, balance the checkbook etc
- Develop insecurity and begin to shy away from previous social interactions and decision making.
- Muscular spasms and twitches (most often seen in early onset Alzheimer's)
- Behavioral disturbances-wandering, agitation, combativeness, psychosis occur in later stages of the disease
- Gait disturbance and poor motor function as disease progresses
